I was born on October 23, 1967 in Red Bank, New Jersey. I'm a twin and a Scorpio. My favorite holiday is Halloween, and I'm a bit obsessed with Harry Potter at the moment.

I received a certificate in film from New York University at about the same time that Kevin Smith unleashed Clerks -- which coincidentally was filmed in the town where I grew-up (Leonardo). As a child, I spent more hours in that infamous Quick Stop (it used to be a Cumberland Farms) buying milk and cigarettes (for my dad) than you can imagine.

Thanks to my brother (who knew Vinnie who knew Kevin), I soon found myself working on the following films made by Smith's View Askew Productions and Miramax: Big Helium Dog, A Better Place, and Vulgar.

Eventually, I tired of toiling long hours for zero pay and decided to start a family. I found myself once again toiling long hours for zero pay. During this time period, I focused my energies on producing shorter, more personal films. And for several years I acted as the Co-Coordinator for the NJ Filmmakers Group (a member salon of AIVF).

In 2002, I began writing personal essays with a focus on feminist and philosophical mothering. My essays appeared in print in Brain, Child, Pregnancy Magazine, Nurturing Magazine, and Welcome Home Magazine, and online at Literary Mama, The Imperfect Parent, Alternet.org, and more.

Now before I lose you completely (I see your eyes glossing over), you should know that I didn't spend all my time writing about diaper rash and post-partum depression. I also wrote a bunch of scripts (all brilliant, of course) just waiting for a buyer (someone brilliant AND visionary, of course).

Most recently I completed a writing assignment for Discovery TV and helped shoot a feature-length documentary about female friendship, called The Bluebelles (which we're currently editing).

Want to see my scripts? Contrasting her brief visit with Henry David Thoreau’s two-year stay at the famous pond provides food for thought for any mom who’s struggled with the sticky issue of carving out "me" time in her busy schedule.

From Mother-in-Chief: In her essay, Out of the Woods, Lizbeth Finn-Arnold found a way out of a nurturing rut and ultimately rediscovered herself, her interests, and her passions. She wrote:

"I had become stuck in a maternal pattern of nurturing others before myself...It has become easier to reclaim some of my former self, as my children get older, become more independent, and spend more time at school. I have also learned to take the time to nourish my soul, mind, body--without feeling guilty."

From Jabberlingual: "Out of the Woods" by Lizbeth Finn-Arnold is another favorite of mine. It made me want to get out my own copy of Walden and ponder about the role of solitude (or lack thereof), writing and motherhood:

I write while there is chaos swirling around me. I write in fits and starts, between making lunches, wiping butts, getting drinks, kissing boo- boos, folding laundry, playing basketball, cleaning up broken glass, giving baths, checking homework, feeding the dog, and breaking up fights between two stubborn siblings. (39)

Boston Mommy Blogger: My first question is about Lizbeth Finn-Arnold’s piece, “Out of the Woods,” where she wrote about being overwhelmed by the 24/7 demands of parenting young children. ... Do you think that her sentiments are shared by other parents who may be afraid to talk about being overwhelmed for fear they’ll be labeled as “bad” parents.
From Hormone Colored Days: I also enjoyed some new essays like Lizbeth Finn Arnold's take on a visit to Walden Pond, "Out of the Woods". I even liked the poetry- something I never bother to read online.

From Arch Words: Another essay that drew me in was "Out of the Woods," by Lizbeth Finn-Arnold. The author engages Thoreau's words in a dialogue that questions what his ideas about solitude can mean for a mother-writer. I could identify with her struggle to combine writing and motherhood; during Ben's first year, I found myself angry with the male writers of the past who could go into a room and close the door while someone else cared for their children. But Finn-Arnold discovers her own sense of solitude and her own voice as a writer--paradoxically by realizing "my children were my greatest inspiration...my Walden Pond... a mirror into my very own soul."
From ReadingWritingLiving: Only one of the pieces in the book evoked a strong negative response, but I think this speaks to its power. When I began reading Lizbeth Finn-Arnold's Out of the Woods: Or How I Found My Muse at Walden Pond,, I was thrilled to read these words:

I am a solitary person. Where others may seek out company, I seek out secluded places of thoughtfulness and self-discovery.

I felt a shiver of recognition. Yes! I thought. That's me! I dove into the essay, thrilled to be reading a piece by a mother who also apparently loved solitude. But as I read, my heart sank. This was not about a mother who managed to champion for her own solitude, but one who resigned herself to never being able to really have it. She ends the essay saying that she writes in "snippets" in the midst of the chaos.

From CarolineAndTony.com: Lizbeth Finn-Arnold’s encounter with Henry Thoreau in Out of the Woods (an essay which is inspiring some thoughtful discussion over at Midlife Mama and at ReadingWritingLiving) starts bitterly:

Thoreau may advise “Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity,” “But Thoreau wouldn’t have lasted ten minutes in his tiny cabin with my two tots.”
But a visit to Walden Pond with those rambunctious kids helps Lizbeth figure out how to create the solitude she needs to write in the midst of her chaotic life.

From Socal Mom's Travel Blog: But my favorite reading in Literary Mama was "Out of the Woods," an essay by Lizbeth Finn-Arnold. Lizbeth is one of those "How does she do it?" kind of women. A mom who is also an accomplished writer and filmmaker, she's what I'd like to be when I grow up -- except that she's a good 15 years or so younger than I, which I find really depressing.

Lizbeth writes of her love of Thoreau (who I've never read - remember what I said about not being intellectual?) and the day she took her children with her on a pilgrimage to Walden Pond.

I was reassured to read that she struggles with many of the same issues as I - that after becoming a mom, she "quickly discovered that motherhood is not conducive to the solitary life of a writer." She writes of making your "own path in the mommy woods" -- and that it's OK to do so. And she recounts how taking time off for herself has really paid off, which reminded me of the burst of creativity I experienced after I attended last summer's BlogHer conference (and why I need to get off my duff and register for BlogHer '06).
Lizbeth writes about blogging and how connecting with other mothers who write have reminded her that "the challenges of motherhood [are] not mundane or insignificant." Her visit to Walden with her kids led to another revelation: "There is no greater beauty in this universe than that of my children." They are her very own Walden Pond.

I'm inspired to go to the source and catch up on Thoreau. I hope I've inspired others to read Literary Mama. You may even enjoy the poetry!

my philosophical mother essays

TRAVEL WITH LIZBETH:

Moving Forward, Looking Back
